How to promote your blog in the early stages

Blogging is something that millions of people all around the world are now involved in and if you have just started your own blog, this means that you have a lot of competition if you are looking to become well known. The truth is that when it comes to blogging, there are probably thousands of people that are also running blogs similar to yours, no matter what your niche is. This makes things really difficult when it comes to promoting your blog as there are already more established and authoritative blogs out there.

However, it is definitely possible to get ahead of the competition, you just have to work for it and make sure that you are focussed on the promotion side of things. Here are a few tips on how to promote your blog in the early stages.

Write great content…regularly!

BBC News - Great Content

This is probably the most important thing that we could mention in this post as content is king when it comes to the internet. Not only should you be writing regular content, but you should also be writing fantastic content. You should be researching and making sure that your content is better than the competitions. This means that people will have a reason to visit your website over the other websites that are out there.

When you first start your blog, it is easy to think that posting is a waste of time as you will probably have very few, or even no visitors to start with. This is a bit of a ‘catch 22′ situation as there’s no point posting if no-one’s going to read it, but then no-one will read it is there’s nothing to read. This is why you have to just go for it in regards to content as it will be read eventually. When you have content, you will also be able to start promoting your website as much as you can.

We would say that you should be writing content whenever you can and if possible, around once a day to start with as you will need to get your site going. Great content will often promote itself and it will mean that all of your other promotion efforts pay off a lot more too, so this is a great place to start.

Get social

Pinterest - One of many social media websites

Yes, you have probably already done this but we will mention it nonetheless. Any good blog these days will be present on most of the big social networks out there which means that you can’t afford not to be involved. As soon as you start up your blog, you should make accounts on the big social networking websites out there including Facebook, Twitter and a few of the others too. You should also be making accounts on the social bookmarking websites out there such as StumbleUpon and Pinterest. All of these are fantastic for marketing your blog.

Being on these social networks will allow you to distribute your content and it will allow you to gain fans. people that love your blog will be able to follow you and keep in touch with you which will ensure that they are kept up to date with new and exciting content too. Of course, you should start trying to promote your social media pages once you have them and it is great practice to incorporate them into your website too.

Build links

This is something that you might not think about that much if you are just starting out a blog but the truth is that you are going to need to build links in order to compete with the other blogs out there. Blogs in their nature will attract some links automatically, same as most websites, but if you apply a link building technique, you will find that you will get a lot more referral traffic and will start climbing up the SERP’s too.

One of the best things to do in regards to link building when you have a new blog is to reach out to other bloggers and small websites in your niche and make friends with them. Don’t ask for a link on their site right away, maybe just explain that they should check out your blog as they might find it interesting. You can contact them on Twitter, Facebook, by email or any other method you like. After a while, you might be able to ask for a link or even contribute to their blog with a guest post. You will then be able to include a link back to your website in this post.

It is also possible to buy links, but this is something that you shouldn’t be doing in the early stages of blogging unless you are a link building expert. For most blogs, you will find that by being active in the blogging community and making friends, you will be able to get a good amount of high quality links without much effort.

Contribute to discussions

UK Business Forum - A great forum for businesses and great for contributing.

This is a neat little tip for new blogs that will get you some referral traffic if done correctly. Chances are that there are some forums and discussions online that are related to your niche. If this is the case, you can contribute to them and after a while, let them know about your website.

This is a tip that works extremely well but you will need to ensure that the content and comments that you leave in forums are in no way spammy and that you are actually contributing to topics. This will earn respect and people will listen to what you have to say.

Conclusion

Promoting your blog is pretty easy if you follow the methods above. We want to stress that the absolute most important thing for any blog is great content and regular content too. This is what will make your blog stand out from the crowd.
