SEO is a difficult thing to get right. There are a lot of people out there who claim to offer SEO services but as you might have found out, a lot of these people haven’t got a clue what they’re doing/ There are a lot of people out there who offer services that are well behind the times or services that will simply serve to allow you to rank for your keywords for a limited period of time, but when the next Google algorithm update hits, your website will miraculously disappear.
The problem is that these days, there are a lot of resources out there and a lot of different ways to become an SEO, but how do you actually become a great one? With so many people entering this industry, you need to stand out from the crowd if you have any hope of getting work from clients in the long term so here are a few things you need to do/be in order to become a great SEO.
#1 – Ignore Google Algorithms
One of the things that you might be doing when learning SEO or trying to become a better SEO is looking at the latest Google algorithm changes. This is something that every SEO will be doing out there and of course, it is an extremely important part of SEO as Google often issues changes that don’t make sense or that affect your tactics.
However, a lot of SEO’s place too much emphasis on Google and their algorithm changes and this can often be what breaks and SEO. If you place too much emphasis on what Google wants you to be doing to rank your website, you will simply be working on something that is going to change somewhere down the line when Google issues yet another update.
Like I said, we can’t ignore Google completely but the less time you spend obsessing over their latest algorithm update and how it’s going to affect your site(s), the more time you will have to actually increase the quality of your content or build links. These are two things that are going to serve you much better in terms of SEO than fretting over whether or not building a particular link is a good idea or not.
Remember, Google is always going to change their algorithm updates, possibly only just to keep SEO’s on their toes, so don’t place too much emphasis on what is current.
#2 – Make GREAT Content
This is the absolute most important part of becoming a great SEO I think, and strangely, it is one that a lot of SEO’s don’t do. A lot of SEO’s are focussed on getting backlinks to their website which of course requires content marketing in some shape or form these days. However, there’s a difference between making great content and making good content.
Good content is probably going to be enough for you to get a few links and even rank for your desired keywords in some niches, but it isn’t always going to be enough to set you apart from the crowd. Think about it, most of your competitors are going to be employing some SEO techniques and chances are that they will be creating their own content too.
The only way that you’re going to beat your competitors is to create content that is incredible. Go the extra mile and create resources that your competitors are going to struggle to beat. Write content that hasn’t been covered before and that is aimed towards your target audience. Don’t just settle for good content like everyone else, think outside the box and attract links from the “big boys”.
#3 – Delegate
You might think this is a bit of a strange point, but let me explain. As an SEO, you are going to have a particular set of skills. In particular, your skill set should be knowing how to rank a website for certain keywords and how to implement a strategy that is going to do that. Now, you can’t do all of this work yourself as often, it is going to require a lot of different aspects including blog post writing, infographic creation, video creation, outreach etc.
Now, chances are that as an SEO, you aren’t going to be the best at some of those tasks. There is probably someone out there that is a better writer than you or a better designer than you so if this is the case, delegate the work and concentrate on what you are good at.
If you’re good at reaching out to bloggers and telling them about an amazing piece of content, do that. If you’re good at designing infographics as well as technical SEO processes, then design them yourself. However, if you’re not great at writing, get someone to write for you and then distribute and promote the content yourself.
As with any industry, it is all about delegation and using the best person for the job in order to achieve the best results.
SEO is certainly not an easy craft to master and with Google issuing updates hundreds of times a year, it is easy to let things get in the way of becoming a great SEO. By implementing the tips that we’ve featured above, you should be able to quickly become a better SEO.
Remember, the key to being the best is to think outside the box. Don’t just copy your competitors as this is only ever going to get you to the same level as them. Think about the things that they haven’t done and use those in your SEO campaign to outrank them. Your results will show just how creative you’ve been when it comes to SEO.
