4 of the most common Link Building Mistakes

Link building is a process that is exceptionally important for almost any website out there if you are looking to rank well in the search engines results. However, external link building is an area that is often done wrong and if you don’t know what you are doing, then you will make a lot of mistakes and do more harm than good. Even the best people can make mistakes, and here are some of the most common:

  1. Link from credible sites – A lot of people that are building links will judge the website on its PageRank ranking alone. This is really not good as this is only a small indication of whether the site is trustworthy. If you are planning to put a link on a website, you need to ask yourself ‘Do you REALLY feel that this website is trustworthy?’ Have a look around and see if it offers good content and also, whether or not the content is relevant.
  2. Quantity not Quality – There are a huge percentage of link builders out there that do only one thing; build links. A lot of link builders will get a million links from every website they can find that allows it and this is really not good. Chances are that 5 high quality and relevant links are better than a million low quality and irrelevant links so bare this in mind.
  3. Where do you link to? – A lot of link builders only build links from external websites and link to their homepage. This is really not good either and is a clear sign for search engines that you are applying SEO techniques. Instead, you should link to many different pages of you website so make it look more natural.
  4. The anchor text – This area of your link is extremely important and there are a lot of link builders that will only use one keyword for the anchor text. This is incorrect and once again, a clear sign of SEO activity. Therefore, you should find 5 or 6 keywords and alternate on different links.

Basically, you just need to use common sense and determine whether links are good quality, the anchor text that is relevant and the web page that is relevant to link to. Try not to worry about PageRank or other things too much.
