How to make a Website In 2012
Registering a Domain
This is the first step that you have to make in order to create your own website. The domain name is actually the URL of your website.
Ex: www.yourwebsite.com/net/org
In order to do this you will need some money to purchase a domain name and it’s anywhere between $7 and $11. You will have to choose a site from which you want to purchase your domain name and there are many sites out there that offer this kind of service like Namecheap and GoDaddy.
To be able to purchase a domain name you will need to do the following:
1. Create an account on one of these services. – This is quite easy to do. All you have to do is click on the Sign Up button and fill out the required fields. Make sure that you put a valid email address because you will need to activate your account thought your email.
2. Click on Domains tab and enter your desired domain name. – If the domain is available the system will notify you that it is and in case that one isn’t available it will give you different suggestions which are related to the domain you are looking for.
3. Select the desired domain name and click the add to cart button. ![]()
4. You will need a valid credit card or verified Paypal account in order to clear the payment and to purchase the domain. – The purchase process is handled much better via paypal but if you don’t have paypal you can always use any of your credit cards.
Setting up a Web Hosting
There are numerous different web hosting services that you can use and many different prices but if you are a rookie in creating websites and you are not really sure what kind of server you need for your website then I suggest that you pick a service that won’t be that expensive. Namecheap and GoDaddy also offer hosting services but you can check out the prices at x10hosting.
The purchase process for the hosting is as simple as the domain purchase process. If you choose to get hosting plan from the same website that you purchased your domain it will be even simpler. Since you already have an account you just need to Choose the tab Web Hosting and then choose a pricing plan.
Pointing your Domain to your Web Hosting
This is the tricky part which shouldn’t scare you at all because I’ll explain it all to the smallest detail. When you purchase your hosting you will have DNS servers assigned to you. What you need to do to point your domain to your hosting is go to your account on the service from which you purchased your domain. Click on My account then view your purchased domains and click the domain name that you purchased. After you click on that a list of options should appear on the left and there you need to click on Domain Name Server setup (DNS setup).
There should be a few options to choose and the one you need to choose is Specify Custom DNS Servers ( Your own DNS Servers ) then copy and paste the DNS servers assigned to you from your web hosting each in a different box. There should be 2 or 3 DNS servers. After you did that hit Save Changes and it will take about 24 hours for the changes to take effect.
Installing WordPress to your site
Installing WordPress to your site is quite easy to do. All you have to do is log in your web hosting account and you will be redirected to your cpanel. The cpanel is where all your tools to manage the files on your website are. When you log in your cpanel you need to search for an icon named Fantastico or you can just type it in the search box. After you click on it a new menu will appear on the left which will have several options and one of the options will be wordpress install. Click on that button and follow the instructions to install wordpress on your site. It’s important to set up username and password that you will remember because you will need those for the next step.
Setting up your Website
After you have wordpress installed it’s time to configure your site. To log in to your website and start configuring open any browser and type your website adding /wp-admin at the end.
Ex: www.yourwebsite.com/wp-admin
This should take you to a log in page where you will need to use the previously assigned username and password.
After you’ve logged in you will be taken to the Dashboard of wordpress where you can start setting up your site. On the left you will see various options. To check out the current appearance of your site click on Appearance and by default it will take you to the current theme you have. If you don’t like the theme you can change it easily by choosing Install Themes from the top and chose the desired filters on the next page that shows. You should choose a theme that will best suit your website so choose the colors wisely.
Another important thing is the Settings option. Here you can set up the name of your site and it’s description which is important for SEO. You can also set up a different landing page of the site if you want to.
